DENTIFIES CARPET WITH SUSTAINABLE ATTRIBUTES
Architects, designers and end users seeking environmentally preferred building materials can now identify carpet that has a reduced environmental impact through the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) NSF 140-2007, Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard. The first carpet products certified to the ANSI-approved standard should be available in the marketplace by mid 2008.
The carpet industry has made significant progress in reducing the environmental footprint of carpet, including landfill use, carbon dioxide emissions, energy consumption, waste generation, water usage and hazardous air pollutants per square yard of carpet. The standard is a means by which these achievements can be quantifiably measured. Further, the standard establishes a pathway towards sustainable carpet by identifying economic, environmental and social benchmarks throughout the supply chain.
NSF 140-2007 recognizes sustainable carpet on three performance levels — silver, gold and platinum — using a rating system for performance and quantifiable metrics in the following areas:
* Public Health and Environment
* Energy and Energy Efficiency
* Biobased or Recycled Materials
* Manufacturing and
* Reclamation and End of Life Management
STANDARD DEVELOPED THROUGH CONSENUS PROCESS
The NSF 140-2007 standard was developed by a multi-stakeholder Joint Committee under the guidance of NSF International, a not-for-profit, ANSI-accredited public health organization. Members included architects, designers, end users, carpet and rug manufacturers, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state and federal agencies responsible for procurement, such as the California Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Task Force's Carpet Subcommittee.
The State of California worked closely to align its Gold Sustainable Carpet Standard with the platinum level of NSF 140-2007 and will transition its purchases to that standard over the next over the 12 to 18 months. Currently 18 carpet products are certified to the California Gold Sustainable Carpet Standard and an additional 11 products are certified to the NSF 140 draft standard.
